Show description: The presidency and assassination of JFK remain a wellspring of fascination and debate. Our guests, filmmakers and journalists Paul Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Gould, offer a deep dive into this history. Paul is a member of the same branch of Desmond Fitzgeralds as JFK—the “F” in JFK stands for Fitzgerald, his mother’s maiden name. Their shared ancestor, Desmond Fitzgerald, a 16th-century Irish nobleman and rebel, was killed by order of Queen Elizabeth I and her inner circle, including Francis Walsingham, Edmund Spenser, Sir Walter Raleigh, and John Dee. This group, often seen as a proto-“deep state,” embodied the militarized edge of Renaissance Neoplatonism. They aimed to establish England not only as a global empire to rival Catholic Spain but as a spiritual dominion under Elizabeth I, tasked with purifying the material world and fulfilling its divine destiny. In our conversation, we explore JFK as a “president of peace,” a Catholic leader symbolically struck down by forces tied to the modern security state—descendants, in a sense, of the British Empire’s legacy.
